Dunes & Golden Hour
Private timing lets the desert soften around you, with ridge views, photography and quiet pauses held until the light turns gold before the oasis comes back into view.
WILD DESERT ADVENTURES
A small emerald-colored lagoon dotted with palm trees and surrounded by enormous dunes of fine-grained sand, Huacachina is a revelation. Local legend says the oasis was formed by the tears of a princess, and that her flowing hair became the dunes around it. Geologists explain that water flowing down from the Andes fed underground aquifers, creating lagoons in the desert.
In the early 20th century, Huacachina became a retreat for Peru's elite. Wealthy families from Lima traveled here for Ica's sunny, dry climate and sulfur-rich waters, once believed to have restorative properties. Today, the oasis is best known for thrilling dune buggy rides, sandboarding down the slopes, and the pure pleasure of watching sunset from atop the ridges of sand.
Private timing lets the desert soften around you, with ridge views, photography and quiet pauses held until the light turns gold before the oasis comes back into view.
Dune buggy routes can be paced with care: scenic climbs, smoother descents and just enough speed to feel the drama of the dunes without losing the sense of control.
From the high ridges, Huacachina becomes a study in contrast: palms, water, rooftops and a horizon of sand, with time to let the whole oasis come into focus.
The experience is strongest when it is not rushed: enough movement for adrenaline, enough pause for the desert to become memorable.
Dune buggy riding and sandboarding are among the most popular adventure activities in South America, but the private version should feel more controlled than chaotic.
Personal preference sets the pace: some travelers want gravity-defying climbs and fast descents, while others prefer a gentler route with time for photographs, quiet viewpoints and a slower read of the landscape.
Sandboarding can stay playful. Most travelers ride lying down, almost like sand sledding; standing runs and private instruction can be arranged for those who want a more technical version.
“At sunset, gold, copper and rose hues move across the sea of dunes, softening the desert into one of Peru's most memorable landscapes.”
Cloud cover changes the whole character of the ride: the dunes darken, the horizon softens.
Given time, the desert does more than impress; it settles into you. This overnight camp north of Huacachina turns the dunes into a complete evening: buggy tracks, sunset, dinner, firelight and a tented place to sleep under the open sky.
The experience begins with a dune buggy adventure, with time to try sandboarding or tubing in the sand. After a pause for sunset, we continue deeper into the dunes toward the campsite.
After dark, the rhythm changes. The camp keeps the essential comforts close: a proper dinner, bar, bathrooms, firelight and tented areas, without losing the feeling of being out in the desert.
The pleasure is in the contrast: adrenaline before sunset, dinner under open sky, a quiet night among the dunes, then breakfast and showers back at Casa Duna the following morning.
Premium UTV routes bring a more powerful and controlled desert experience for travelers who want the adventure to feel refined.
Keep it playful lying down, or arrange instruction and proper gear for travelers who want to try standing runs more seriously.
When conditions cooperate, the dunes can also be read from the air: quieter, wider and more surreal than the usual route.
Climb the dunes in back of Hosteria Suiza before sunset, in time for spectacular views.
Yes, especially if you care about timing, photography, comfort and a less crowded rhythm. The private version is less about nightlife and more about access to the dunes at the right hour.
Late afternoon into sunset is the most atmospheric window. The light softens, shadows lengthen and the dunes become much more dimensional.
Yes. Routes can be adapted for a slower scenic drive, a moderate adventure or a more thrilling ride, depending on the traveler.
It pairs naturally with Ica wineries, Paracas wildlife and coastal hotels, making it easy to build a one-, two- or three-day private adventure.
Huacachina & Ica
Huacachina sits just outside Ica, where vineyard country gives way to one of Peru's most photogenic dune landscapes. From Lima, it can be shaped as a fast desert adventure, an overnight escape, or part of a broader south-coast journey with Paracas and Ica.
Use this map as a simple orientation point: the oasis, the city of Ica, vineyard stops and dune routes sit close together, so the day can move from pisco heritage to open sand without feeling scattered.
Make Huacachina a private desert chapter, not a rushed dune stop.
The strongest days here combine controlled adventure, sandboarding, oasis viewpoints, sunset timing and the nearby calm of Ica's wine country.
