Dune Buggies in Peru

The desert, tuned to your appetite for motion.

Peru has magnificent wind-sculpted sand dunes, and Huacachina and Paracas are the principal gateways for exploring them. Huacachina lends itself naturally to this experience because the oasis sits directly within a sea of towering dunes. Seconds after departing, the village falls away and the dunes fill your entire view.

The Paracas desert is sparsely inhabited and largely free of other travelers. The experience in a 4x4 SUV is not hurried or especially fast, but it feels adventurous and dynamic, with the quiet momentum of a desert expedition.

Huacachina Dune Buggy Ride

This is the classic desert ride, shaped privately around the mood you want. Some guests want bigger drops and sharper momentum; others prefer a scenic route with pauses on the ridges, soft wind, photographs and time to take in the enormous quiet of the dunes.

We usually recommend the 4 PM window because the desert becomes more forgiving: the light is softer, temperatures ease, shadows reveal the curves of the sand and sunset gives the tour a natural finish.

Can-Am Desert Tours

Can-Am tours offer a more compact, athletic version of the dune experience. Like the buggies, they are driven by a professional driver, but the vehicle feels lower, lighter and more immediate, with a sharper connection to the shape of the sand.

They are a strong choice for guests who want open-air energy and a sportier ride without taking control of the vehicle themselves. The result can still be calibrated: playful and dynamic, or smooth enough to enjoy the ridgelines without white-knuckling the afternoon.

Sandboarding: conquer the dunes

Sandboarding is always completely optional. Private sandboarding classes, with patient instructors, are available upon request.

Most travelers lie down on the board, sliding down on their stomachs. This is easy, fast, and fun!

Sandboarding while standing is more technical and athletic, like snowboarding on sand. It is riskier, too, so it justifies a proper lesson with the right gear and guidance.

Mini-Buggy Route in the Paracas Reserve

The mini-buggy tour is a lighter, more scenic desert experience for travelers based in Paracas. It gives guests a sense of motion and freedom without needing to drive all the way to Huacachina or commit to the steeper, more theatrical dune drops around the oasis.

This route works best for guests who want a short adventure with a strong sense of place: coastal desert, Pacific views, wind-shaped terrain and time for photos. It can be a good fit before or after a Paracas Reserve visit, especially when the day calls for something active but not too intense.

Longer Desert Excursions by 4x4

For guests based in Paracas, we can arrange longer desert excursions by private 4x4 SUV. These routes are usually around two and a half hours, with expert drivers, off-road sections through different dune sizes and intensities, time for sandboarding and a softer return route back toward Paracas.

The vehicles are built for comfort and safety, with air conditioning, seatbelts, GPS, two-way radios, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, auxiliary lighting for night driving and serious off-road tires. A picnic is not part of the standard format, but we can discuss a separate desert setup when the day calls for it.

Good To Know

The small details make the desert feel easy.

Eye Protection Matters

Bring sunglasses or safety goggles. Wind and vehicle movement can lift fine sand quickly, and protecting your eyes is one of the simplest ways to keep the afternoon comfortable.

Desert Indulgence

For the right group, we can include a chilled bottle of wine or pisco after the ride. Some travelers prefer to go further, turning the pause in the dunes into a full private picnic at sunset.

Safety Limits

Most of these motorized desert experiences are not appropriate for pregnant travelers or guests with back or spine concerns.

What To Wear

Comfortable pants, closed shoes, a hat, camera and a light windbreaker all help. The desert can move from hot sun to cool wind quickly, especially near sunset.

Privately Tuned

A desert adventure, personalized to your level of thrill and itinerary, will create lifelong memories of Peru's coast.
